Heartleaf arnica is a western mountain woodland perennial that spreads into colonies of heart-shaped leaves topped with large golden daisies, brightening the dappled floor of conifer forests. Rich in helenalin, it is toxic taken internally — belonging on unbroken skin only as a topical liniment.
