False Goatsbeard
Astilbe biternata
The only Astilbe native to North America, and a big one — plumes of creamy white rise to six feet over coarse, compound foliage in early summer. It is easily confused with Aruncus dioicus, which has toothed leaflets and lacks the large terminal lobe. A Southern Appalachian species for moist, rich shade.
