A big, silvery, salt-loving evergreen shrub that forms dense thickets of cover and seed for quail and other birds. Thrives in saline, alkaline, and seasonally wet desert flats. Leaves, young shoots, and seed have all served as food, the seed ground into a meal or used as piñole.
