In a wet season this annual can turn whole roadside ditches and low meadows solid gold in early autumn, at exactly the moment migrating monarchs and late bees need fuel. It self-sows heavily and appears where conditions suit rather than where planted. The barbed seeds hitch a ride on anything passing.
