Cocoplum
Chrysobalanus icaco
The standard native hedge shrub of South Florida, dense to the ground with glossy rounded leaves and a red-tipped new flush in the coastal form. Bears white or dark purple plums that are edible and popular with birds. Tolerates salt, shearing and periodic flooding, which is why it has replaced so much exotic hedging.
