Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus
A low, green-stemmed shrub that erupts in golden flower clusters in late summer, feeding migrating butterflies and bees when the steppe is otherwise spent. Tough and drought-proof. A latex from the root has traditionally been chewed like gum, and the plant used as a spice.
