Large-flower Heartleaf
Hexastylis shuttleworthii
An evergreen Appalachian wild ginger whose heart-shaped leaves are marbled silver along the veins and hold through winter. The flowers are jug-shaped, mottled violet inside and hidden at ground level in the leaf litter, pollinated by whatever crawls in. Slow to establish, then permanent in cool acid shade.
