Shortleaf pine is the most widespread Southern yellow pine, valued for timber and able to resprout after fire. A fast, adaptable evergreen for dry upland soils across the Southeast. A vanillin-like flavoring has been extracted as a byproduct of its resin, a minor and mostly historical use.
