Jeffrey Pine
Pinus jeffreyi
A stately Sierra Nevada pine, near-twin to ponderosa but told apart by bark that smells of vanilla or butterscotch in the sun and by cone prickles that curve inward, so the cone is gentle in the hand. It tolerates serpentine soils and cold better than ponderosa. Long needles and deeply furrowed red-brown plates make it a fine specimen where there is room.
