Psychotria nervosa
The default native shrub of South Florida landscapes, with deeply corrugated glossy leaves that catch light like quilted leather. Small white flowers appear nearly year-round and give way to red drupes that mockingbirds and cardinals strip. Takes deep shade under oaks or open sun, and tolerates the alkaline limestone soils that defeat many natives.
