Giant Sequoia
Sequoiadendron giganteum
The largest living thing on earth by volume, restricted in the wild to about 75 groves on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. Fire-dependent: heat opens the cones and clears the duff its seedlings need. A specimen only for very large landscapes, where it is faster-growing and more adaptable than its rarity suggests.
