West Indian Mahogany
Swietenia mahagoni
West Indian mahogany, the timber that furnished 18th-century Europe and now a standard Florida street and shade tree. A broad symmetrical crown of fine pinnate leaves casts light dappled shade, and woody five-parted capsules split open on the tree to release winged seed. Salt- and wind-tolerant; briefly deciduous in spring.
