Foothill Beargrass
Nolina erumpens
Foothill beargrass forms a grassy fountain of long arching leaves with plumes of creamy flowers, a tough, fine-textured evergreen for dry, rocky Southwestern slopes. Beargrasses are sometimes lumped with agave and sotol as a roasted starch, but Nolina is a different genus with its own reputation for poisoning grazing stock — not one to treat as food.
