Texas Sacahuista
Nolina texana
Texas sacahuista is a low, grass-like beargrass forming dense mounds of fine evergreen leaves with flower clusters nestled among them, drought-proof groundcover for hot, dry sites. Beargrasses are sometimes lumped with agave and sotol as a roasted starch, but Nolina is a different genus with its own reputation for poisoning grazing stock — not one to treat as food.
