Texas Sabal Palm
Sabal mexicana
The native palm of the lower Rio Grande Valley, with a stout trunk, large costapalmate leaves and old leaf bases that persist in a crisscross pattern on young trunks. Hardier than most tropical palms and long-lived, it anchors the remnant palm forests of deep South Texas. Its small dates are sweet and edible.
