Desert Agave
Agave deserti
A compact gray-blue rosette of stiff toothed leaves, sending up a 15-foot flower stalk of yellow blooms once at the end of its life. The roasted hearts were a staple food for the Cahuilla and other Sonoran peoples. Needs blazing sun and gritty, fast-draining soil; the spines make placement a real consideration.
